In Alberta, anyone who helps people buy or sell a home must have a licence from the Real Estate Council of Alberta (RECA). RECA licenses all real estate professionals in the province.
The word REALTOR® is different. It is a trademark of the Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA), and only CREA members can use it. In the Calgary area, that means members of the Calgary Real Estate Board (CREB®), which has about 8,700 REALTORS®.
So every REALTOR® is a licensed real estate agent, but not every licensed agent is a REALTOR®. REALTORS® also follow the REALTOR® Code, an extra set of ethics rules. If you have a problem with licensing, you can contact RECA. If it is about the REALTOR® Code, you can contact CREB®.
